I think the best way to describe myself to my piano buddies, is to say that we are probably quite similar in many ways. We all have an interest in playing piano and are  trying to shorten the learning curve. Like myself, my buddies would also like to have some fun with other players who feel the same way.
Ever since I started in 2003, I have looked for piano buddies. In my mind they are the kindred spirits who understand the feeling of being driven to “learn piano” when we could be playing golf or bridge or engaging in some other more socially acceptable pastime.
I think the world is full of piano buddies. These are the folks who want to get going and keep improving in this wonderfully rewarding pastime. I want to have discussions with them about instruments, sight reading and how to practice. I want to have discussions about how to stay motivated, and let them know that ordinary, hard working people can play piano just by working at it. It is not just for the talented people who take their ability for granted.
My background is in teaching, not piano, but computers. My background is logic and productivity techniques and making things easy to understand and showing people that some skills really can be acquired if they are confident and patient and use some creative learning techniques.
I know the frustration we feel when ability doesn’t immediately follow hard work. I can tell you confidently that patience with yourself will pay off in the end. I know that it can be very lonely following your dream of being able to express yourself musically. Hopefully, this blog will assist us in finding friendships with other folks who share the same feelings and aspirations.
I am not a talented musician, and I learned to play at an advanced age, (I am frequently the oldest person in a room), but sometimes we can learn a lot from walking with people following the same path we are. Maybe so, maybe not, but as my buddy Leo would say, it couldn't hurt!
The picture you see shows me in one of my previous projects, The Judaica Sound Archives at Florida Atlantic University. These folks do a marvelous job of archiving, preserving and making available to the world, the music of artists most of us never heard but now can.
